Arizona Society for Respiratory Care
Continuing Education Approval Criteria
As of January 1, 2010

  1. BCLS and NRP through the American Heart Association are pre-approved for continuing education units. BCLS is approved for 2 clinical continuing education units and NRP is approved for 8. Both ACLS and PALS will need to go through the AzSRC approval process. Presenting cards directly to the Board of Examiners will no longer work to secure continuing education for these programs. Each application will be granted hour-by-hour continuing education units for time actually spent in training. Test time does not qualify for continuing education.

  2. NBRC credentialing exams, except for the initial CRT exam, qualify for 10 clinical continuing education units. Successful completion of the exam must be demonstrated to the BOE and does not require the AzSRC approval process. Any NBRC exam can be repeated after the original credentialing process for self evaluation and will be accepted for 10 clinical continuing education units. All exams must have a passing score.

  3. Applications for more than three (3) continuing education units will be approved only with the complete breakdown of time including breaks, lecture time, and testing time. Testing and evaluation time do not qualify for continuing education.

  4. All topics must meet the scope of practice as defined by Respiratory Care Practice .L\ct, ARS R 4-44-210. Even though a topic may be pertinent to an individual practitioner, if it is in not in our Scope, it will not be approved. (Example, chemistry does not fall under our scope of practice except by a very indirect connection, therefore, it will not be approved.) Non-clinical topics can be approved if they fall directly under the non clinical classification ARS R-4-944-121. O.

  5. Teaching modalities must be interactive and facilitated. All videos scheduled for CEU approval must be facilitated to provide for discussion of material presented. Proof of facilitation is the responsibility of, and must be provided by, the institution applying for approval.

  6. Certification will be issued only when the application is legible and complete. This includes the date(s) of program presentation. Objectives must be in proper format. Applications not meeting these guidelines will be returned.

  7. CEU approval will be granted for the date of presentation and can be granted for subsequent dates in the current year of application, providing these date are listed on the application. Each date will count as an individual application for the cost structure. Reapplication is required at the end of each calendar year.

  8. A thirty (30) day period for approval of applications, after receipt by the continuing education committee, is needed.

All applications are to be sent to:
    Tammy Redasky
    Pima Medical Institute
    3350 East Grant Road
    Tucson, AZ 85716

  9. An attendance roster must be used for registration at the time of the program offering. All participants receiving a copy of the certificate must sign the attendance roster for actual receipt of CEUs. The original attendance roster must be maintained by the provider for a minimum of three (3) years to be available to the ROE for their investigations.

  10. The target audience for CEU 's must include respiratory therapists.

  11. CEU's are counted from the date of license. Any CEU offering taken prior to licensure will not apply to continuing education credits.

  12. CEU's can be applied for any time in advance, however, applications received greater then forty five (45) days following an event will not be considered for approval.

  13. The RCP is responsible for his/her own CEU's. The Board of Examiners, the Arizona Society for Respiratory Care, and the Continuing Education Committee will not be responsible and will not be held accountable for the practitioner who has not followed through with the personal responsibility for CEU records.

  14. Courses/programs required for basic employment or annual updates of employees, do not qualify for CEU's. Exceptions are BLS, ACLS, NRP, and PALS.

  15. Any continuing educations programs approved by the AARC or the AzSRC with the appropriate certificate will automatically be recognized by the Board of Examiners. CEU's from other states are not accepted unless they have been approved by either the AARC or the AzSRC.

  16. Institutions, after paying their annual fee, can apply for programs taught at their hospital per the guidelines set by the AzSRC Board of Directors. Employees who attend outside programs must receive CEU's from the provider of that program or apply for them as individuals.

  17. Individuals can apply for continuing education units at the cost set by the AzSRC Board of Directors.

  18. All approved CEU programs will be issued an official AzSRC certificate with the program number, the official embossed seal of the AzSRC, and the proper AzSRC signatures. Providers are to photocopy this certificate for their participants. .A11 information must be filled in on the certificate or the certificate is considered void.

  19. The AzSRC will not provide a tracking mechanism for CEU's. Each individual practitioner is responsible for maintaining his/her own records.

  20. CEU's are approved on an hour by hour contact basis increments of 0.5 hours.

  21. Computer programs must meet the following criteria for approval.
    1. The computer-based program must be owned by the provider.
    2. Individuals can not apply for approval of computer programs through the AzSRC.
    3. Any computer-based CEU program, for acceptance by the Board of Examiners, must be approved through the AARC with a designated number of CEU credits.
